About the Program
TROT โ Therapeutic Riding of Tryon at Fence Foothills Equestrian Nature Center provides equine-assisted activities for children and adults with physical, developmental, and cognitive disabilities โ all in a safe, supportive setting.
As a Premier Accredited Center of Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International, TROT meets the highest standards for safety and instruction. The program serves participants in Polk, Henderson, and Rutherford counties (NC), and Spartanburg and Greenville counties (SC).
Therapeutic Riding (Mounted Program)
Lessons are designed around each riderโs individual goals and led by PATH Intl. certified instructors.
Three trained volunteers support each rider.
Focus on balance, strength, coordination, and confidence.
Activities build focus, sequencing, and direction-following skills.
Most work is at the walk; advanced riders may briefly trot.
Each 30-minute session includes hands-on horse care โ grooming, saddling, untacking, and bonding time โ building responsibility and connection alongside riding skills.
Unmounted Program
For individuals unable to ride, TROT offers ground-based equine experiences that deliver powerful physical, cognitive, and emotional benefits.
Participants engage in:
Grooming and leading horses.
Learning horse communication and behavior.
Structured activities that build sequencing and listening skills.
Games, crafts, and demonstrations by equine professionals.
Unmounted sessions typically run for one hour.
