The Beginning

In 1984, Fence Foothills Equestrian Nature Center became a nonprofit nature education and outdoor recreation center, built around an original land grant of 112 acres generously contributed by the Mahler family, who first came to Tryon in the 1920s.

Since that time, the property has grown to 384 acres and now serves thousands of people each year through programs in nature study, outdoor recreation, and equestrian competition. The organization is governed by a volunteer board of directors working in partnership with a small professional staff.

The FENCE Center

Classrooms, meeting rooms, and administrative offices are located in the FENCE Center, overlooking a diverse landscape of open meadows, marshland, and woodland.

More than five and a half miles of hiking and riding trails wind throughout the property, including a paved trail designed for accessibility. Trails feature informational stations and shelters to enhance the outdoor experience.

A nature pond with an observation boardwalk serves as an outdoor classroom, offering opportunities to observe wildfowl and native plant species in their natural habitat.

The Equestrian Center

The Equestrian Center includes three lighted show rings with all-weather footing, including a covered arena. Permanent stabling accommodates more than 300 horses across eleven barns, and spectator seating provides excellent viewing of events.

The facility hosts a variety of disciplines throughout the year, including Hunter/Jumper competitions, cross-country events, dressage, rodeo, and carriage driving.
